Chapter Ten

This had been a monumentally stupid idea. Holding Cassie close like this, the way her body molded to his, the way she smelled, the way they moved in unison, it was impossible to remember that they weren’t still a couple. Impossible to remember all the years that separated them. Impossible to remember anything except how damned good and right this felt, how great they’d always been together.

The song was slow, the singer’s voice deep and melodious. Cass would probably have a dozen words to describe the song, words that touched on the music and the timbre but Phoenix just knew that he liked it, and he especially liked this, dancing with Cass as the sky filled with tiny little dots of snow, dusting their heads white.

It was possible the whole town was out tonight, but Phoenix was only aware of Cassie, and he was pretty sure it was the same for her. Her cheek was pressed to his chest, his chin was on her forehead, and his hands were low at her back, holding her close to him. Not that he needed to—her own hands were wrapped around his neck, her fingers toying with the hair at his nape so a thousand memories and a jolt of desire stirred through him, reminding him not just of their past but also of the fact that he was a red-blooded male.

“You’re not cold anymore?” he asked, just to make conversation.

She looked up, her eyes scanning his first before dropping to his lips. Her head shake was just a tiny movement, but it was enough to unsettle her hair, so he breathed in the sweet vanilla fragrance of her conditioner and his gut rolled.

“Good.” It was just a gruff acknowledgement. They moved slowly, not completely in time with the music. It was as though they were dancing to their own beat, their hips shifting in tempo with a song only they could hear.

“It’s good having you back, Cass,” he said quietly, meaning every single syllable of that sentence. It was dredged up from deep inside of him. Phoenix didn’t want to analyze the implications of his admission.

“It’s just temporary.” But her smile was wistful, almost as though she wished . . .

“I know.” He lifted a hand to her cheek, padding his thumb over the soft flesh there. Her eyes fluttered shut.

“Phoenix.” Her voice was quiet, rolling through him like the gentle breeze of a summer’s afternoon. It was husky with a plea, just like earlier, in the bedroom at Tommy’s—but for what? For him to stop? Or keep going?

He waited, and when she looked up at him, their eyes met and he felt a jolt of certainty. Instincts that had been formed many moons ago took over so Phoenix was leaning forward, slowly, inexorably bringing his face to hers. In the back of his mind, with the small part of him that was capable of rational thought, he knew he was moving slowly to give her time to understand his intention, to tell him to stop, to pull away from him if she wanted.
